Questions and answers

Straight answers about car keys, lockouts and ignitions. If yours is not here, call.

General

Do you come to me?

Yes. We are a mobile service. We drive to the car in Issaquah, Sammamish, Preston and nearby areas along I-90, including parking lots, garages and trailheads a service vehicle can reach.

Are you open at night and on weekends?

Yes. We take calls 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Which makes do you work on?

All major makes: domestic, Asian and European, from Ford, Chevrolet and Jeep to Toyota, Honda, Subaru and BMW. Tesla is the one exception: for Tesla we handle lockouts only, not keys.

How much does it cost?

It depends on the vehicle, the key type and the job. Call or request a quote with your vehicle details.

What do I need to show?

ID and proof the car is yours, such as registration or title. We check this before making keys or opening a vehicle.

Do you do house or business locks?

No. We work on vehicles only: car keys, key fobs, lockouts and ignitions.

How do I find my VIN?

Look through the windshield at the bottom corner on the driver’s side, or check your registration or insurance card.

Can someone else meet you at the car?

The person at the car needs to show ID and proof of ownership, or be listed on the registration. Call us first if that is not you, and we will tell you what we need.

Is it safe to wait for you on the freeway shoulder?

No. If you are stuck on I-90 or another highway, get to a safe place and call the Washington State Patrol or 911 first.

Car key replacement

Can you make a key without the original?

Often, yes. That is an all-keys-lost job, and we handle it on site for many vehicles. See our lost car keys page for how it works.

Do you need to tow my car?

Usually not. The equipment comes to the car. If your specific vehicle needs something we cannot do on site, we will tell you on the call.

Will the new key work with my remote and push-to-start?

Remote and smart keys need programming as well as cutting. We confirm what your vehicle uses when you call.

Lost car keys

Can a locksmith make a key with no original?

For many vehicles, yes. We decode the lock to get the key cuts, cut a new blade, and program the chip or smart key to the car.

Can you stop the lost key from working?

On many vehicles the programming step can erase keys the car no longer has. Ask when you call if you think the key was stolen.

My car is at a trailhead. Can you come there?

Yes, if a service vehicle can reach the lot. Give us the trailhead name and which lot when you call.

Key fob and smart key programming

Can you program a fob I bought online?

Sometimes. It has to be the right part for your vehicle and not previously programmed to another car. Send us the part number first.

Do I need to bring my other keys?

Yes, if you have any. On many cars, programming a new key can drop keys that are not present.

Will my remote buttons work too?

For most fobs, the remote lock and unlock functions are programmed at the same visit. We confirm what applies to your car.

Spare car keys

Is it easier to make a spare than replace a lost key?

Yes. With a working key in hand there is less work to do, which is why we recommend getting a spare early.

Can you come to my workplace?

Yes, as long as we can park next to the car and you can be there with the original key.

Does a spare need programming?

If your key has a chip or remote, yes. A blade-only copy would open the door but not start most modern cars.

Car lockout

Will opening the car damage it?

We use professional entry tools made for this job, and work carefully around seals, glass and wiring.

What if my keys are lost, not locked inside?

Then we open the car and make a new key on the same visit when the vehicle allows it.

Is there someone available at night?

Yes. We take calls 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Can you open a locked Tesla?

Yes, Tesla lockouts are something we handle. For Tesla we only open the car; we do not make or program Tesla keys or key cards.

Broken key extraction

Can I pull it out myself?

It is easy to push the piece further in or jam the pins. If tweezers do not grip it on the first try, stop and call.

Can you make a new key after removing the broken one?

In many cases, yes. We can cut from the broken halves or decode the lock, then program the key if your car needs it.

What if the ignition itself is damaged?

We also repair and replace ignitions. We tell you what we find and what your options are before doing anything further.

Ignition repair and replacement

Why won’t my key turn in the ignition?

Common causes are a worn key, worn wafers inside the cylinder, or steering lock pressure. Try turning the wheel gently while turning the key. If that does not work, stop forcing it and call.

Can you replace the ignition without a tow?

In many cases, yes. The work is done at the car. We tell you on the call if your vehicle is an exception.

Will my old key work with a new ignition?

A new cylinder can often be set up to match your existing key. If not, we cut a key to match the new ignition and program it if needed.

Stuck with your car right now?

Call with the vehicle and where it is parked. We take calls 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
